A fire door is normally 44mm thick or stamped on top with a fire rating. If it isn’t a fire door, you’ll need a new one, you’ll be redirected to our fire door form to get a full quote.
Fire doors must have 3 certified hinges. Look for CE/UKCA/Certifire marks stamped on the hinge.
Smoke & fire seals are normally fitted in the door frame. If you don’t have them, or they’re damaged, we’ll need to replace or retrofit them into the door itself.
Perko chain closers on the side of the door aren’t strong enough once smoke seals are fitted. A compliant overhead closer is required for fire doors. BS8300 door closers are Ideal for elderly users or people with mobility issues. Easier to open but still compliant.
The top gap must be 2–4mm to comply. If your top gap is larger (e.g. 6mm), we’d usually raise the door by 2mm to reduce it to 4mm. But remember — this also increases the bottom gap by the same amount, so when you answer the bottom gap question, please add on the adjustment.
If your fire door has smoke seals, the bottom gap must be no more than 4mm. If your fire door has no smoke seals, the bottom gap can be up to 10mm. If it’s bigger than this, we’ll need to fit a drop-down threshold seal (flat front doors) or a hardwood threshold bar (cupboard doors). If the gap is very large, you may need a new compliant fire door set.
Fire-rated locks must have intumescent protection fitted to slow the spread of fire. If you’re not sure, you can Google your lock type (e.g. night latch, euro cylinder, sashlock) and compare it. If your locks are not compliant, in most cases we can simply upgrade them by adding intumescent lock protection pads rather than replacing the entire lock.
Any letterbox in a fire door must be a tested fire-rated unit with intumescent liners. If yours isn’t fire-rated, we can supply and fit a compliant one so you don’t need to replace the whole door.
Any glass in a fire door must be fire-rated glazing (FD30 or FD60). Look for a stamp or certification mark in the corner of the glass. If there’s no stamp or paperwork, it’s not compliant and will need replacing.
A D-handle makes your fire door easier to open and close, especially once a door closer is fitted. This isn’t a compliance requirement, but it’s a popular low-cost upgrade for £25+vat)
